Introduction
| Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra |
Review of the samsung galaxy
s22 ultra and i'm gonna give you a tour
of the phone and share with you some of
my initial thoughts about it now
normally i do an unboxing but i couldn't
be bothered to set up the shot this time
because judging by the size of the box
there's not a lot inside just like apple
samsung have removed nearly every free
accessory you get in the box and it does
make the unboxing experience a little
less exciting compared to the chinese
phone brands which really give you a
moment to remember when you receive your
new phone this year the s22 ultra starts
at 1199 and for that comes with 8 gigs of ram
which is less than last year's base
model and just 128 gigabytes of storage
which for me at this price point is
unacceptable i think it has to be at
least 256 gigabytes for that amount of
money you think of the pricing to storage
ratio
DESIGN
So my first impression in hand was
how big it is this is the first time
i've ever used an ultra samsung phone
and i never thought i'd say this but
holding it makes the iphone 13 pro max
seems small i picked up the iphone after
using the samsung after a whole day and
thought oh this is cute the samsung has
a 6.8 inch screen and does feel big but
also somehow way more comfortable to
hold than the iphone from the front the
design looks sharp and squared off you
could say like a samsung galaxy note
wink wink but the actual sides of the
phone are rounded and smooth and lead on
to an even smoother back panel i've gone
for the burgundy color here which i
regretted instantly upon saying it in
person i tried to be different and not
go for the normal black or white colors
but honestly this ron burgundy color
just isn't cutting it for me the screen
on the s22 ultra is excellent
DISPLAY
I mean an a plus rating this is a quad hd plus
dynamic amoled display with 550 pixels
per inch an incredible 1750 nit peak brightness which might make this the brightest smartphone display ever hdr 10 plus
hertz ltpo refresh and gorilla glass
victus plus now that is a top end screen
it's also slightly curved but not enough
to cause any problems in terms of
gestures swipes or typing there's also a
40 megapixel camera cut out hole punch
at the top of the display and on the
back we have the main camera system
which i have to say from my small time
testing is probably the best camera
system i've ever used
S-PEN
Amount of rich detail picked up by all of these sensors is fantastic the colors look gorgeous the dynamic range is
incredible images come out much brighter
than the iphone and are processed in a
much more appealing style but it's the
zoom capabilities that are the real game
changer here having a 10 time sensor
that is also so reliable and detailed
really changes the whole game for me
especially being somebody that enjoys
street photography to have this
capability on a phone is outstanding and
i can't wait to share with you photos in
the full review also looks
fantastic again the colors look good and
the stabilization is nice and smooth but
i will say it still isn't better than an
iphone it's good but not iphone good and
yes my apartment area in china is
currently in lockdown hence all of these
fascinating people strolling around
and the colorful walls being erected
there is also 8k video up to 24 fps and
this actually might be the only 8k
footage i would recommend using as there
does appear to be stabilization walking
along which is something i haven't seen
on any other phone so great job samsung
the selfie camera is also excellent and
has a normal and wide setting and is 40
megapixels so this is what the selfie
video looks like on the s22 ultra we've
had a lot of flagship phones this year
especially from china there are flagship
phones that only go up to 1080p 60
frames a second this is full 4k 60 so
this and the iphone doing a proper job
here moving further down from the camera
system we have the s pen as this phone
is now basically a note galaxy ultra
hybrid it slots right into the bottom of
the phone where it will stay charged and
popping it out gives you a host of
options including note taking sketching
and smart select
SPECS/PERFORMANCE
This year samsung
say latency has been reduced by 70
giving this a much more true to life
feel when writing or sketching
powering my s22 ultra is this snapdragon
8 gen 1 but this chip is unfortunately
only available here in china or in the
us anywhere else is going to be using
samsung's own exynos 4 nanometer chipset
the phone has felt pretty snappy i have
the 12 gigabytes of ram version and
opening and moving through apps fills
lightning fast i've only played a little
bit of light gaming on pubg and with all
the highest settings on it was all good
in the hood actually better than that it
was super smooth probably the smoothest
i've ever experienced one thing i have
noticed is it does have a tendency to
run at a high temperature when doing
anything intensive such as downloading
or installing apps charging both wired
or wirelessly as well as when using the
camera so this is something i will for
sure look into over the next week the
BATTERY
S22 comes with a 5 000 milliamp hour
battery and so far the battery life has
been so so i don't think this phone is
going to get me through the whole day
without charging if i'm honest but we'll
see how it goes i'm heading for around
seven hours of screen on time at the
moment with 12 remaining we also have an
ultrasonic finger impression scanner which
works very well even when getting out of
the shower with a water-soaked and
wrinkled thumb the sensor still works
looking around the rest of the phone we
have the dual sim card tray although
some models of this phone only come with
a single nano sim tray we also have the
usb port and bottom firing speaker next
to the s pen on the right hand side we
have the power button and the volume
rocker which is placed quite high up for
some reason and at the top we have the
extra microphone and secondary speaker
in the earpiece
SYSTEM/OS
One cool thing about this phone is that it supports four years of software
updates which is incredible in the world
of android and a big improvement on
samsung's part one ui looks great
although can be a little jittery are
times and it does need an update or two
to smooth out some of the kinks that are
taking away from the experience there
are plenty of customization features and
neat software tricks as usual from
samsung as well as a ton of ecosystem
support
FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall my initial feeling is that thisp
is potentially one of the best phones
you can buy right now but my question in
the full review will be should you buy
it at this price point sure it has some
awesome hardware but i have a feeling
that over the course of the week i will
notch up a few complaints about this
Mobile phone and there are numerous regions I have
however to test or completely test
